Firetide Press Release
PressRepublican Story 5-18-2009
It all began when an existing video surveillance customer, Mold-Rite Plastics, of Plattsburgh, NY, asked to purchase 7 new video cameras. They had 89 analog cameras operational, with room on their combined 6 digital video recorders (DVR’s) to run a maximum of 96 cameras. While their system was working, it was roughly 5 years old, and the retrieval of video from the combined DVR’s had become cumbersome. Still, the need was there to increase the cameras throughout the 24/7 manufacturing facility. As a security integrator and communications consultant, I could have sold them the 7 additional cameras, but took the opportunity instead to offer our customer an education on modern video surveillance technology. That is what we do at Wells Communications. With IP (Internet Protocol) camera and recording technology advancing so quickly, we strive to continually educate ourselves to pass along new opportunities to our end-users, in hopes of providing safety, productivity and efficiency to their business operations.
The customer embraced the IP technology and the upgrade to Mold-Rite Plastic’s extensive security system began. Followed by their family-owned properties in Plattsburgh at both Geoffrey’s Pub and The Treadwell Bay Marina.

The Treadwell Bay Marina project was a multi-layered deployment. Initially, their goal was to provide public Wi-Fi access to boaters and guests. Once the marina owners learned about the wireless infrastructure known as "mesh networking", they realized that mesh offers unique capacity and performance capabilities. The marina’s Firetide mesh network is a state-of-the-art wireless system with the highest performance in the industry. Choosing to move forward with this wireless infrastructure, other applications such as IP video surveillance and point of sale were added to the system – a very cost effective solution for any business wishing to take advantage of their networks. From an integration standpoint, hardwiring was virtually impossible – a wired solution throughout the 150 acre property was never really an option. Eliminating hard wiring provided cost savings and ease of deployment, allowing network connectivity between buildings and throughout the lakeside property. Through the Firetide mesh network, Wi-Fi and IP video surveillance networks can be deployed much quicker than any wired solutions – and can also be more resilient.
"Many of our boaters are executives and business owners from the New England area, as well as tech-savvy Montreal and Toronto. To attract new guests and keep top-flight members happy, we needed to provide constant connectivity. These days, even vacation demands e-mail and the internet", said Gary Titherington, owner of the Treadwell Bay Marina. "We knew there had to be better technology out there. Maureen keeps us up to speed on this product", he said.

The mesh network consists of 5 dual-radio outdoor nodes strategically located throughout the property. From these mesh nodes, we configured 4 wireless access points to provide Wi-Fi on and off the water, as well as 13 IP security cameras to cover the entrance gate, parking areas, buildings and lake access. The Firetide mesh is enough to handle access points and video cameras, still allowing the network to be robust enough to operate and transmit broadcast quality video. Two web cams can be viewed from www.treadwellbaymarina.com , allowing out of town boaters to hop on-line and see what the conditions are before making the trip to Plattsburgh. The cameras used are from Panasonic Security Products, the premier manufacturer in the industry, for which Wells Communications is an "iPro Certified Reseller". Panasonic partners with the best dealers in the security and telecommunications industry to ensure only the highest solutions are provided for its clients; quality control is driven by a rigorous certification process and only those dealers who have developed proficiency in the design and installation of Panasonic IP System Solutions earn the title "Panasonic iPro Certified Reseller."
