Refarming
In 1992, the Federal Communications Commission
(F.C.C.) began an initiative they dubbed “Refarming” to
create more radio frequency channels (spectrum).
The first step was to require radio manufacturers
to begin making narrowbanded two way radios. By taking
the traditional 25KHz separation between two way radios
down to 12.5KHz, additional conventional radio channels
would become available to the 2-Way radio consumer.
The second phase of Refarming would require
two way radios to be narrowbanded again to 6.25KHz creating
even more channel availability. At this point, the F.C.C.
has not made it mandatory for 2-Way radio users to begin
operating on these narrowbanded channels. However, this
time is coming and it will require radio users to replace
their older 25KHz equipment over time.
The best advice is when purchasing additional
or replacement two radios, buy equipment that can be
easily converted to the narrowband channels by your 2-Way
radio dealer.
